ROLY POLY ROARTY: SAVED FROM THE TURKEY

0

rpr_body_w-10I know it has been two weeks since my last “Roly Poly Roarty” post. Things here have been crazy. Let’s start quickly with Thanksgiving.

For as long as I could remember, Turkey Day has been my second favorite holiday, with Halloween being my first. Funny how both of these days involve food, huh? Needless to say, sitting at a table with mom’s cooking covering every inch made me a bit nervous, but I was mentally prepared and ready to go. It was only by an act of bad luck that saved me from the temptation and instead of gorging myself on this most delicious of days, I found myself eating four Chinese-takeout shrimp and a wanton before passing out on the couch for the night. Crisis adverted!

Yes, my food addiction has been in existence since childhood, but how is it I was so much tinnier when I was younger? I mean, I graduated college at 200 pounds less than what I was before the surgery, that’s an insane jump!

Sure, everyone is expected to put on weight as they get older, that is how metabolism works, but I went way out of my range, to the point where I thought I could never return.

The answer to the above question is simple: I played a lot of sports, and the older I got, the more intense they got. There was hardly ever a day that I wasn’t playing hockey or running any where from a 5k to a marathon, six in all, so yeah, there was no amount of food I could eat that I couldn’t burn off in those days.As I got older, I had less time to “play” anything aside from adult, and my eating caught up with me, and it wasn’t pretty.

Knowing this, it didn’t take a lot to figure out that once I was at a safe weight to start running again without blowing out my knees or destroying my hips, I would continue to do so and not allow life to dictate my health. I’m happy to report that in my absence of writing “RPR” the past two weeks, I finally started hitting the pavement again, and it is an awesome feeling!

With the help of a new Apple Watch app called “5K Runner,” I have been training for my first 5K in more than 20 years.  The way the app paces your workouts, I have literally felt no major pain at all, and since starting a little over a week ago, I’m already up to two miles. Not bad for a guy who weighed over 300 pounds just two months ago!

The hardest part is still finding the time; some things never change unless you change them. Believe me, when I say as soon as I get in the house at night all I want to do is lock myself to the couch and pray for the weekend, but not this time. I will not go down that road again.

What keeps me going? When I feel like taking the night off, I think about what I ate that day. My diet is pretty open these days, but I still have small quantities of everything because overeating hurts way too much. I really do try to eat as healthy as possible, but I am enjoying and appreciating what I have, and I know if I want to continue with a satisfying, healthy diet, as opposed to a traditional healthy diet, running is a necessary evil — and a small price to pay for a higher quality of life. So while most people are nestled in their warm beds, I’m running in the rain, wind and cold, all while loving every minute of it!

So was it sad to miss Thanksgiving? A little, but I believe it happened for a reason. I’m still on track, and I am happy to report that as of today, exactly two months post-op, I am now down 64 pounds. There is a lot more I could share about clothes, exercise and my new favorite kitchen appliance, but I’ll save that for another day. I’m sure the remainder of this year will go by in a blink now that we hit the gateway holiday, and there will be so much more to share.

The good news is our journey has really just begun!
